Hey there! I’d like to welcome you to this blog about League of Legends. It might not be much, but it’s a way for me to combine two of my hobbies; writing and gaming. I figured this first post will just be about who I am, as well as why I chose league. That way you can put a personality to the words.
First and foremost my name is Brian, and I’m a Junior in college. I major in Communications, with a double emphasis in Media/Journalism and Advertising/PR. I’ve been a gamer all of my life, ever since I was 5 and got a Game Boy and Pokemon Yellow for Christmas.
I starting playing league my Freshman year of college. I made a lot of friends my first semester, but I felt more comfortable just hanging out in my room playing Xbox. League of Legends helped me come out of my shell, so to speak. My friends introduced me to it, and we’d all bring our laptops into my building’s common room and play. What got me hooked on league was its sheer competitiveness. I played sports all of my life. Baseball, Soccer, Tennis you name it. I loved the competition and the feeling of winning. And league was the first video game I had ever played that replicated that feeling. Other games like Call of Duty, Halo, and Gears of War were fun to play but never felt truly competitive. As long as I personally did well in those games, it didn’t matter if I had won. League is different in that aspect. I could have a completely shit game, but as long as the team won I was happy. Likewise, I could have played out of my mind, but if we lose its a disappointment.
That competition of playing naturally developed into a love for Esports. Every weekend my roommates and I fire up twitch and watch the LCS in our living room. I never thought that I would find myself watching pro gaming, but I am just as invested in it as I am with the NBA. And that is a lot.
I’m a big daydreamer, and I knew league was right for me when my daydreams started to change. In fourth grade I would daydream about being donned in a pinstripe uniform, turning a double play with Derek Jeter in the World Series. A decade later, when I aimlessly walk across campus to class, I picture myself in a sold out arena with a headset draped around my neck, getting ready to play at Worlds with C9 or CLG.
Now don’t for a minute think I’m good at the game, I’m not. I’m only gold, but I have progressed every season. Starting in bronze and moving up a division here and there might not be much, but I think it’s something to be proud of. The only thing I do brag about is the fact OP.gg says that I’m top 15% in NA. Gold might not be that high to people who play the game, but when you tell your unknowing girlfriend your top 15% in something, she seems pretty proud.
Anyway that’s enough about me.
I plan on using this blog as a way to sharpen my writing skills, while writing about something I have a passion for.
I plan on posting at least two or three times a week. I’ll mostly be blogging about competitive play. I figured I’d give my opinions on LCS matches, IEM Katowice, etc. From time to time I might also write more about my experiences. This is by no means a source of news or anything. It’s just meant to be a fresh take on the game from a 20 year old in college.
